Thanks, Alvaro. Actually, what was happening was a white screen with the pages on the left showing and no wait cursor. It was as if it was displaying white on white. But the clue was in your post: my /etc/rc.config.d/tetex.rc.config was 0 length, empty. Apparently the packager of kdvi did not make it dependent on tetex, which was not installed by default.
