A very common problem indeed. Definately FAQ material.
I need a file (/usr/bin/ginstall in this case). How can I find which package I need to install from the distribution discs.
mount SuSE cd#1 and cd to it. zcat ARCHIVES.gz | grep '/usr/bin/ginstall'
rpm on knows about those *already* installed, doesn't it?
I'll jump in before Volker here and suggest his program 'susegrep', found on his website at: http://volker.orcon.net.nz/soft/susegrep
Unfortunately there's no official way. SuSE really should create an index compatible with susegrep and place it on their server, for each version etc.
Why? If they just document the method I use, it would not be neccessary. This has worked at least since SuSE 5.3. Regards Ole
