I'm about to try qt-experimental, but it's not clear to me if I should remove "qt" first or not - should I?
Yes, otherwise things get confused about which QT you're using. You don't necessarily need to remove it 'first' though. Just go into YaST, select the standard QT to be removed and the experimental QT to be installed, and it will all be done smoothly (hopefully). It is possible to have two QTs coexisting happily (I have both QT 1.44 and 2.3.0 on my system) but it is not a good idea (and not necessary) to have to versions of QT so close together on the system.
