I am not quite sure in 7.1, but in 7.0 and earlier you set text mode login by editing /etc/inittab: Change the line id:3:initdefault: to id:2:initdefault: Maybe someone else can jump in here because I seem to remember reading somewhere that the init run levels changed with 7.1.
