configure caches most test results in a file called config.cache. Check
if the source tarball wrongly includes a config.cache file (some sadly
do this). If it indeed does, delete it and rerun the configuration. You
also need to do that if you want to reconfigure the software.
If all that doesn't help, I'd need to have a look at the configure.in
and possibly aclocal.m4 to see if maybe the test has bugs.
