I updated KDE2 to 2.1.1 just last week. I ran into problems because there were some directories in my /tmp directory that were "left over" from kde2. before you install or after, if you experience problems, check your /tmp dir and look for these 3 directories: kde-<username> ksocket-<username> mcop-<username> After I updated I received a "DCOP-server error" and could not run KDE2.1.1. I deleted those directories and everything was fine after that. I also removed my ~/.kde2 directory. I wanted all the default settings. I don't know if this is actually necessary but I fixed the splash screen hang during login. Good luck and let me know if you have any trouble.
