I am running KDE2.1 in SuSE 7.1.

Do xdpyinfo | grep RENDER if the output is "RENDER" than something is strange... but I don't have the solution (maybe a XFree reinstallation?) if there's no output, then you are out of luck... your driver does NOT support RENDER extension. Wait for XFree 4.0.3... it's coming out in 2 weeks or so.
