My observations about X crashes is that they are usually caused by faulty X server setups. JLK On Sunday 11 March 2001 17:45, you wrote:
It looks as though the problem with X spontaneously terminating has come back with my current setup. It's not nearly as bad as it was a few weeks ago, but it is still an unwelcome visitor. What seems to trigger it now is clicking the "desktop" icon. One of the things I did in the past to try an get more reliable X behavior is to deselect the windows behavior options "Display content in moving windows" and "Display content in resizing windows." I'm hoping that will prevent this in the future, but it is very difficult to isolate a problem when it does not occur consistently, and there is no good error report.
What happens is I simply click the desktop icon in the kicker and the whole screen goes blank, as if I had hit CTL + ALT + BKSP to restart X. The next thing displayed is the KDM login prompt. I really hate this because I loose any work I don't have saved. When writing code, this can be very upsetting.
