Anyone gotten root-tail to display on their desktop? I use (after su) root-tail -f -g 80x25 -100-100 /var/log/messages. Worked with KDE1.1.2 but not 2.0. Kinda liked seeing what was going on. I get no error message, and ps aux shows it's running, but nothing on my desktop.
The root-tail package works fine, but you simply can't see it's output anymore, because KDE2 changed the way the root window is being handled. Actually KDE2 does not use the root window anymore, they use a separate window on top of the root window (without borders) to display the icons and the background. There was a way to disable this feature, but I don't remember it, sorry.

Thanks, Lenz. This is what I suspected...at least until Ben said he had an rpm that works on his 2.1. It, however, did not work on my box, either. Guess I'm off to kde.org. BTW, although 7.1 started out bumpy (for me) all probs have been resolved: eg: SUSEfirewall, the Kedit thing, wvdial.dod. I knew solutions would surface as others installed, and they did. This is a great community and we use a great distro. Thanks for the continued good job... Tom -- Tom Bishop tb64710@alltel.net RLU #12043 SuSE 7.1 PRO
