I went back to the kernle from the distribution, and the system came right up. It seems to be hanging on the IDE initialization. I have a DVD IDE drive and all the rest of my secondary storage is SCSI. It goes through an attempt to sync the bus, or something similar, it reports a failure to determine bus speed and a fallback to 33mhz, then it shows something about an IDE controler at irq 14 and just sits there.
I'm NOT trying to fix this. I'm just making the info available to all.
If you can build it, I can break it.
