I don't understand your problems - now I use SuSE 6.3 and type russian characters normally at vi.
Lucky you--I typed cyrillics on SuSE 6.4/KDE1.1.2 normally too.
At home I have SuSE 7.0 + XFree86 4.0.2 + KDE 2.1 (from sourceforge.net), and setting up russian keyboard never been easy - I've just triggered grp_ctrl_shift (i don't remember correctly) in sax2. Now I can easily print russian characters in all kde2 apps. In console I simply added this to /etc/rc.config:
CONSOLE_FONT="ruscii_8x16" CONSOLE_SCREENMAP="koi8u2ruscii" CONSOLE_UNICODEMAP="ruscii.uni" CONSOLE_MAGIC="(K" RC_LANG="ru_RU.KOI8-R"
I can type cyrillic in Mozilla, though it is not KDE app. konsole even refuses to display cyrillic characters already existing in a file. On startup konsole spits: konsole -fn -misc-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-koi8-* QObject::connect: Cannot connect KAction::activated() to Konsole::(null) konsole: WARNING: Could not find schema named and then it uses iso8859-1 font. kvt is more friendly, it displays cyrillic at least but does not allow to type. AFAIK, SuSE 7.1 differs from 7.0 in glib version. 7.1 uses 2.2, while 7.0 used 2.1 I wish I had no problems and nothing to understand.... -Kastus
Note: ruscii is a font containing ukrainian characters too. (I live in Ukraine). That's all.
Best wishes, Roman Shevtsov. http://www.zhmerinka.net/

I never felt myself so miserable.
I installed KDE1.1.2 base and its dependencies to get kvt.
I start kvt with koi8r font. Mutt displays message in koi8 encoding without problems. Vi rejects completely input in ru keyboard. I tried Icelandic keyboard, I can input thorn character without any problems. But as soon as I switch keyboard to ru no input is possible in vi.
Some progress achieved though: cyrillic characters can be typed in Mozilla.
It drives me completely nuts. I am missing some simple setting in kvt/bash/vi.
I only wonder why it was simple in KDE 1.1.2 and why it is so broken in 2.1?
I am using KDE 2.1 rpms for SuSE 7.1 from KDE mirror at sourceforge.net.
Togan, can you do me a favour? Can you add ru keyboard to your keyboards and try typing in vi?
