Why Swap space is not mounted?

Hello Linux folks. When I compiled a new 2.4.0 kernel and rebooted the system my both swap partitions didn't get mounted. When I returned back to old 2.2.18 kernel both swap partitions were mounted properly. Could somebody explain me please why it happened? Thanks.
