The answer may be right under my nose, but I'm not seeing it. If I go to the SuSE FTP site, I see packages which are fresher than what I got with the 7.1 distribution. If I tell YaST2 to update it finds some stuff, but not nearly as much as I see on the FTP site. This freshness issue is one good reason to understand where YaST2 is going for these updates. Another good reason is that it's dangerous to allow my computer go out connecting to servers I know nothing about.

The patches/ sub-directory has the info files for the online update.
Michael, Thanks for the answer. I still find this a bit confusing. If I browse through the FTP site you point to above I see many packages with newer version numbers than the ones I have installed. Nonetheless, these more recent packages do not show up in the list of package available for update when using YaST2. Can you explain this seeming inconsistency? Thanks, Steve
