thank you, I have read the files and followed step by step but alas, it doesn't work, I also read the HOWTO, when I evetualy found it and various chapters from books I've spent the best part of 3 whole days on this, and I must admit I'm beginning to wonder why I bother. I really suggest you read these chapters and follow them step by step. O'reilly has it all for you listed what you need to do:

I get the following error messgae when I try smbstatus:
couldn't open status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK
why does this happen? Those microsoft shares are looking more and more appealing...
