Apache Upgrade on 6.3

I have SuSE 6.3 running on an old 486 that is keeping the world running in
my home. It's been doing so well for so long that I'm almost afraid to
touch it!
However, I decided at least to put on the updates from the SuSE website
for 6.3. Everything has worked fine except for the apache upgrade. I
have downloaded and installed the latest apache and mod_* files. All went
on the system without any complaints. I ran SuSEconfig again without
problems
However, when I restart apache it first complains that it can't find the
file rc.reset and then fails when there is no startup.perl file. Not only
is there no startup.perl script on my system but the directory it's
supposed to be in also doesn't exist.
I've gone back to the earlier version of apache and the mod_* files as
shipped with 6.3. They work without problems.
Any hints???
