Hello again
My experience with laptops (and very limited knowledge of Linux) are as
follows:-
1. I had a Toshiba Sattelite Pro 4300. The video card would only configure
using frame buffer, although there was mention of Xfree 4.xx having a fix.
The PCMCIA was configured out the box.
The CPU fan would not run.
The modem worked fine once the Lucent driver had been installed.
2. I presently have a HP Omnibook XE2. This uses a silicon motion Lynx
chipset which would not work under the version supplied with Suse 7.0.
However using the Xfree86 4.0.1 supplied with cover disk from Linux Magazine
the card was recognised and works okay untill you scroll down pages etc. The
windows then seem to multiply themselves and stick in place. Hopefully this
will be resolved in future releases.
The PCMCIA card (3Com 10/100) is recognised and configured fine.
The modem is a ESS ES56CVM-PI and doesn't work. I have been unable to find
any information about this modem chipset so far.
This laptop was given to me by my company so unfortunately I had no say as
to specs. required.
I apologise if this sounds negative, however this is not the case as I've
had a lot of fun trying to get these two notebooks to work properly. This
mailing list has been extremely helpfull, and if anyone has solutions to my
problems please let me know.
Good luck with your search.
Regards
Mark Annandale
