Can somebody share an idea how to access MS SQL7 database from Linux box?
There are a number of 'Unix' ODBC drivers that allow you to access MSSQL (an other DB's) from Linux/Unix. Other than using the CD for a coffee mug mat, I don't have anything to do with MSSQL, so can't say how good the drivers our.
To access M$ SQL from NT box there is a query analyzer client application and M$ access. Does somebody know if there anything similar for Linux?
No, not that I know of. All the GUI stuff is Windows only.
By the way, could somebody please advise what is better to use for huge amounts of manufacturing process data - MySQL or PostgreSQL?
They are both different types of database, used for different types of solution. MySQL is a 'fileserver' database, which means it is basically just 'tables' of data that is read/writing direct to disk. This makes MySQL very fast, but very limited in functionality, which means you have to put all your 'code' in the 'client' app. PostgreSQL is a database server (like Interbase, Oracle, MSSQL etc.), and allows multi user use, triggers, stored procedures etc. etc. This makes PostgreSQL slower than MySQL, but infinitely more powerful, as you can put all your 'code' in the server. If you are looking for a Database server, rather than a fileserver, then I would also take a look at Interbase. I have been using it for over ten years and I personally think it is a lot better than PostgreSQL. Cheers Phil
