I switched to it by letting Ximian (formerly helixcode) Gnome switch it
for me during the installation process:

   http://www.ximian.com/

However after I did that I couldn't choose any other type of desktop
manager (besides failsafe and gnome).  Then after I rebooted it told me
that the gdm directory wasn't owned by the correct group.  It's group
was set to "shadow".  And after I reboot again the gdm directory is
reowned by shadow group.  I gave up and started using kdm (login
manager) against my will.
