I just looked on SuSE's site to see if I could go back a version, and it looks as though the have removed 4.0.1. This is not good!

BTW: The last crash I had involved resizing a window and not dragging it. This alway happens with mouse actions on my system.

I looked there too. I found an update to 4.0.2-4 (I was using 4.0.2-2) and had no luck with it regarding stability. I notice that X dies randomly mostly when some soft crashes accidentally.
