As Chris told you already, it can be done with the newer version of LILO, 
but in my case it was not enough to install the new version. I had to add 
one line to lilo.conf with following content:

lba32


Thats it.

As an alternative, there is a different loader called GRUB which I switched 
to since it is a much more powerfull loader then LILO.  It has an 
interactive console mode you can switch to just in case you made a mistake 
in the configuration file and your system will not load.  Once you are in 
the console mode you can load the correct kernel and boot into the new 
system.

BTW SuSE, can we get and RPM of GRUB in the 7.1?
