How about:

xv -root -random -wait 300 -wloop -ico -vie -fl xv.files &

where:
  300 is frequency in seconds that background will change
  xv.files is a beforehand prepared file with the full path of the
images

just put it in the Autostart (KDE.1.1.2)
It should work with KDE2
