Hi,
I am trying to set up one of my machines (SuSE 6.4) as a dial-in server. I have followed the example in O'Reilly's "Linux Network Administrators Guide" and various How-to's I have found on the web.
I have got to the point where my 'windows' clients can dial in, the username/password is checked and accepted, and the 'tray icon' appears in the Windows task bar, but then the clients get disconnected and the Linux box tells me
mgetty FATAL: yS0 cannot get TI0
Looking in /var/log/mgetty.ttyS0 gives me...
12/11 11:04:32 yS0 mgetty: experimental test release 1.1.19-Nov24 12/11 11:04:32 yS0 WARNING: DSR is off - modem turned off or bad cable? 12/11 11:04:33 yS0 TIOCMBIS failed: Input/output error 12/11 11:04:33 yS0 cannot turn off soft carrier: Input/output error 12/11 11:04:33 yS0 tcgetattr failed: Input/output error 12/11 11:04:33 yS0 cannot get TIO: Input/output error
That means your modem wasn't initialised properly. Try to set debug level in mgetty configuration to some higher level and see what it gives.
12/11 11:04:33 yS0 mg_init_device failed, trying again 12/11 11:29:05 ##### data dev=ttyS0, pid=3830, caller='none', conn='33600/LAPM/V42BIS', name='', cmd='/usr/sbin/pppd', user='/AutoPPP/'
The modem answered the call and started pppd. Please look at /var/log/messages what pppd put there. You may also increase debug level for pppd to see in details what's going wrong and why it dies. -Kastus
It looks like it is to do with the modem set-up (It is a good, working one), but other than that I am stuck.
Many thanks
Phil
