Subject: yeah, baby! = xcdroast + acer 8432a CDRW
Greetings,
For those interested, I got the cd r/w noted above installed and running in both win98se and suse 7.0, in addition to the atapi Toshiba CDrom I had before.
Before you slam me about buying a crap Acer product, let me tell you it only cost $131 delivered! (www.essencom.com) Plus, a friend was using one with good results.
Hardware installation was a snap, and the Acer is listed as xcdroast compatible. http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.5
dmesg showed it was recognized too.
Win98se install went fine. Adaptec's Easy CD software seems good.
To get xcdroast to work, I had to configure the Acer as an IDE-SCSI device, with changes to /etc/modules.conf, /etc/lilo.conf, as outlined on the SuSE support database. (I left the other CD as IDE, because Yast expected(??) it to be /dev/hdb) Once I did that, things were rolling. One thing I did notice is that "Simulation-write" appears to be turned on by default, so don't think you've actually burned a CD when you have just simulated it!
I've made copies of important linux directories, such as /home, archived my digital cam photos, and burned a backup SuSE 7.0 disk 1. I guess I will copy an audio CD (for personal backup purposes only!) as a next step. Now, if only I had a fast net connection so I could burn a copy of the new KDE2!
Have a goodun,
steve pauly
