Scott,
I should have read some of the troubleshooting files before my previous post,
just to refresh my memory.
Before powering on the VM, choose Settings>VMWare Tools install...
This points the VM to a floppy disk image on the host from which it will boot
and load the SVGA driver for the VM.
My VM is tied up just now, doing other work for me, so I can't test this right
now, but I think that is what finally made my efforts go well.
