I read an article on the P4 vs. the Athlon today...

They compared a P4 1.5GHz with a Athlon 1GHz... although the P4 was better
at 3d performance, the Athlon won hands down at floating point calculations
(1300ish compared to the P4's measly 850ish) - great for compiling! Unless
you want a hardcore games machine, go for an Athlon (or Duron if you have a
small wallet). Both processors are excellent value for money.
www.tomshardware.com did an interesting comparison between the speed per
cost unit of numerous processors - very informative....

As far as stability is concerned - I haven't heard anything about AMD
systems being unstable in any way compared to Intel systems...
