Hi Steve,
I'm not sure what your problem is but here are some pointers in getting a
printer working. I'm using SuSE 6.3 but things should not have changed too
much.
First check to see if you can print directly to the actual device.
As root try sending a text file to the port or try the following command:
# ls -l > /dev/lp0
It may not print correctly but you should see something printed if the
port is working. If it does not print check your hardware connections
and the bios setup.
It is useless trying anything else until you get the actual port working.
Once you see data being outputted you have to get the lpd working.
Check the status of the printer with the lpc command. (see the
man pages on lpc) try the 'status' command to see what the status of
the printers. I have found the 'restart' command is quite usefull.
e.g.
lpc> status
ascii:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
lp:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
raw:
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled
no entries
no daemon present
Also check the files in /var/spool/lpd should contain a directory for each
of the printer types you have specified when setting up apsfilter.
e.g.
merlin:/home/graham # ls -l /var/spool/lpd
total 76
drwxr-xr-x 2 lp lp 4096 Jul 24 20:06 PS_600dpi-a4-ascii-mono-600
drwxr-xr-x 2 lp lp 4096 Nov 11 07:05 PS_600dpi-a4-auto-mono-600
drwxr-xr-x 2 lp lp 4096 Oct 26 00:29 PS_600dpi-a4-raw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4 Nov 1 05:02 lpd.lock
If you can provide some feedback on the above I may be able to help further.
Regards,
Graham Smith

Hi everyone.
Epson 760 printer. One month later with 7.0 and still no output.
When I configure the printer with Yast2, here is the outut in

Nov 9 20:07:29 linux kernel: parport_probe: succeeded

Nov 9 20:07:29 linux kernel: lp0: using parport0 (polling).

Am I doing anything wrong? I have an Award BIOS set to SPP with interrupt 7
at
378. I have the new Yast2 downloads too and a ticket open with SuSE on the
matter. If anyone can help then I'd be really grateful. It works fine under
windos however. I'm not new to Linux either and have installed many a
friend's
machine without too many problems but this just has to be something deeper!
Thanks, Steve.
