problematic scsi tape backup of reiser on raid root

I have a system that is running a reiserfs on a raid array /dev/md0. The system runs fine. I have a scsi tape drive /dev/st0. I try to do a full backup with: cd / tar cf /dev/st0 / --exclude /proc It seems to do a backup, but when I try to restore to a directory such as: cd 1 tar xf /dev/st0 I only get back the /usr directory. ????????????????????????????? It's a 20 gig Travan tape, so I know it isn't running out of space, since it's only a 4 gig system. What am I doing wrong? I would hate to have to buy bru. ;-)
