AFAIK the desktop waits for the programs to terminate. When your are root,
they terminate right away, when your are a normal (l)user, the programs
can override the terminate signal.

I beleive this is a known problem with KDE2. There are working on it.
A solution is not known yet...

P.S. What do you think about Konqueror?
I think Komueror alone is worth all the trouble.
