dhclient will overwrite the resolv.conf whenever an
update is given from the isp. if you are using
dhclient, you may wish to look into that area for
problems. for instance, i could manually put in
nameservers, but everytime dhclient updates the lease,
the file is wiped out, and created with the isp's
nameserver list. one way to fix, is to write a file
with the info you need into resolv.conf.tmp and add a
line at the end of the dhclient script to append the
resolv.conf.tmp to the new resolv.conf. (cat
/etc/resolv.conf.tmp >> /etc/resolv.conf)
of course, this is only helpfull if it is actually the
problem :)

there is an option in rc.config to turn off updating resolv.conf by Yast. YaST will happily overwrite one you have carefully done yourself in vi unless you turn off the update function each time SuSEconfig is run.
Since upgrading from SuSE 6.4 to SuSE 7.0 I am having bizarre problems with resolv.conf I have set up in rc.config search localdomain and nameserver and told it to create resolv.conf. I can log onto the net but cannot go anywhere at all because resolv.conf is totally blank. The only way I can get my mail or do anything else is by connecting to the net opening a terminal su root, vi /etc/resolv.conf, filling in the information manually while connected and
