thanks for the reply.......when i checked /etc/nsswitch.conf it was set
as you said with the hosts: file dns
then i rechecked /etc/hosts and found my entry for the unix box was
gone! who(what) overwrote it?, (maybe SuSEconfig?) once i re-wrote its
address into /etc/hosts, arp -s and rarp -s both work.
