I'm trying to swap out drives from a smaller drive to a larger drive. I want to transfer my entire linux system to the larger drive but am having problems with the MBR. Upon reboot I'm getting lil- and then nothing. The boot process just hangs. What is the best way to accomplish this transfer?
Assuming you've copied all of the data over correctly, and you're now trying to boot off the new (larger) hard disk... You'll need to use a boot disk (you do have one, don't you... ;-> ) to boot up the system and rerun 'lilo'. You may have to alter the /etc/lilo.conf file if you have settings specific to your old hard drive. The LIL- prompt appears when the data in the map file is invalid, which is usually caused either by faulty disk geometry, or by moving /boot/boot.b without reinstalling LILO (which is probably what happened in your case).
