I have been using SuSE since 6.1 and have bought each succesive issue, culminating with the 7.0 Professional Update. I have successfully installed and used all of them, and, having played around with other distros as well (RedHat, Mandrake, Storm, Debian etc) I am more than happy with SuSE. Except for one thing, which is that YAST1 has never been able to successfully install SuSE either from scratch or as an upgrade on my machine. It always gets as far as installing all the selected packages and the dies with a red error message which simply says "Some Error Occurred". If I abort the install and use YAST1 I can install no problem.
The machine has a Supermicro mb, a P11300, 64mb ram, 1 6gb WD hd (all Windoze) and one new IBM 20g hd (all Linux). Other stuff is a Pioneer DVD drive and an HP Cdrw. Everything works, and I've never had any problems installing other Linux distros and even W98 (ugh, but I need it for the kids games, DVD and work !).
But I cannot install using YAST2 (I can BTW use it for system configuration OK).
Anybody else had this problem ? Anybody from SuSE care to comment ? I sent an e-mail to support but they have yet to respond.
At work I have DTK computer with: M/B with i815 chipset, 256MB SDRAM PC-133, 20GB Fujitsu 7200rpm 2MB cache UATA/66 HDD with 4GB hda1 for Win ME, rest for SuSE 7.0 Professional, Nec DVD. Trying to install three times with no luck. Strange RPM errors or instalation dies without error. Firs try was with "Almost everything" from DVD, second with "Default with office" from CD, third "Default" from CD. Only when I select "Minimal" from DVD instalation was fine. At home I have DTK computer with: M/B with i815 chipset, 128MB SDRAM PC-133, one 15GB IBM 7200rpm 2MB cache UATA/100 HDD with 6gb hda1 for Win ME, rest for SuSE 7.0 Professional, second 20GB IBM 7200rpm 2MB cache UATA/66 HDD with 4GB for FAT32, rest for SuSE 7.0 Professional and SuSE 7.0 Personal for experiments, Nec DVD and HP CD-RW. All instalations go without problems as from DVD as from CD-RW. Any comments?
