in.ftpd is the standard no-nothing FTP server. wuftpd is the most common, and the default on Red Hat. ProFTPd is becoming more common, I think it is the best, IMHO - it is certainly easier to deal with. I had no trouble at all using the ProFTPd RPM that came on the SuSE 6.4 CDs - did you try the one that came with your CDs? Always try the RPM that came with your chosen distro, then upgrade later. One possible reason for your trouble could be that (maybe) one of the ftpds was running standalone, instead of through inetd. JW At 01:22 PM 10/23/2000 -0700, you wrote:
So I tried to set up proftp this weekend and found that I couldn't get it to work. I downloaded it, compiiled, installed, changed inetd.conf and restarted but couldn't ftp to my box. So then I tried the same thing with wuftp and had the same results. I was getting a message that the server had dropped the connection... I read about a similar problem on the SuSE site and did what it told me to do (which is set inetd.conf back to using in-ftp) and I was able to ftp to my box again.
So what ftp am I using and what was I doing wrong?
