Two excellent books I recommend are: Sam's "Teach Yourself GTK+ Programming in 21 Days", by Donna Martin, et al. and New Rider's "GTK+/Gnome Application Development", by Havoc Pennington. Glade is the only tool I've tried. It can generate C, C++, Perl, and Eiffel code. It's not quite like VB. You design the interface and then generate code. The code editor is not integrated.
