That's great Lenz! But I was kind of thinking that a tiny executable script (maybe called something nice) installed in /sbin could look for and zgrep a copy of INDEX.gz on /var or wherever after installation, and return results like you've listed. When you upgrade, part of the upgrade could remove the old copy of INDEX.gz and replace it with the newer version. Just an idea which I think would be nice on the distro... and I'm very impressed by your resourcefulness! k.
p.s. I'd also love a little commandline utility that told you on which CD you could find which rpm...
How grepping for the package name using the file INDEX.gz on CD1?
Example:
[grimmer@wiles CD1]$ zgrep pine.rpm INDEX.gz ./CD1/suse/n1/pine.rpm ./CD1/suse/sec1/pgp4pine.rpm
Bye, LenZ
