There seem to be problems with packaging the latest betas of KDE2, although no one seems sure why. People who use packages report things as broken while anyone who compiles from CVS source seems quite OK. This issue has been raised on the KDE developer lists, although the finger was pointed straight back at the packagers. KDE Media Player works fine for me. You can set the date to whatever format you choose (although it doesn't appear to work correctly in the 2 day old CVS release I'm using). The AM/PM setting does appear to be supported (according to the code) although I couldn't find out how to change it. It's controlled by the locale setting, but I'm not sure how. Not being able to forward links and pages from konqueror as mail is a missing feature; I still actually use Netscape more than konqueror because konqueror (as a web browser) is still missing a few vital things - compatibility with the HTML which is out there being one of them. (This probably requires the HTML out there to get in line, rather than any problem with konqueror, but having the moral high ground doesn't make konqueror work any better.) Broken Java is still being worked on and hopefully will be better in the final release. However, I agree with your summary. KDE-2.0 needs another month or two's worth of polish before it is ready for the world at large. It's not going to be another GNOME-1.0 debacle, but KDE will lose it's rock solid image when this goes out next week. Reading between the lines on the developers list makes me feel that they have reached the same point that Linus did when he wanted to release the 2.2.0 kernel. They're accepting there's bugs in it, and things are missing, and other problems which people will complain about, but they have to release it at some point. Relatively few people use development systems in real life situations these days, so the only way to squeeze out those last bugs is to widen the audience to the mainstream. I guess I would advise anyone who is looking to KDE-2.0 to wait for 2.0.1 if their system is mission critical, or used by people who need hand holding. I have used KDE-2.0 exclusively on both my main workstations for a couple of months now, but I won't switch my girlfriend away from KDE-1.1.2 for a few months yet.
Supposedly the release of an updated KDE2 we downloaded is supposed to be a "final" beta. I sure hope NOT!!!! There's MUCH that needs fixing, let along missing features!!!
For starters, the KDE Media Player is broken....won't come up...period!! Nice going guys...it worked in beta 5. You STILL can't change the time to a 12 hour format (AM/PM), nor set the date to m/d/y! This is standard stuff and SHOULD be a given! You still can't forward a web page or link as a mail attachment from Konqueror either. And, Konqueror still has broken Java, that is KDE2 has broken Java. Some sites are ok, and others are not.
KDE2 MUST have MUCH more work before it's ready for prime time.
