My mistake. Here is the little script I use (and have tested this time :)) to start the secondary server. (I'm using this now to look at photos with.) startx -- :1 -bpp 32 --Steve Augart Alex Daniloff wrote:
Hello Steve, Thank you for response. However, when I do startx -bpp 24 :1 or startx -bpp 8 :1 it gives me an error: Fatal server error Server is already active for display 0 if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. Does it mean that I have to shutdown my running X server before switching it to another color depth. But this is not what I need to acheve. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Alex
Perhaps your needs would be met by running a second X server on a different virtual terminal?
startx -bpp 8 :1
Then use Control-Alt-F8 to go to the second X server.

Hello Linux folkz, Is it possible to change depth of the screen without restarting X
server?
I mean to change the screen depth from 32 bpp to 8 bpp and back without restarting X server. Thanks in advance. Alex
