Hi Everyone.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
i have tried them all in various combinations and have ended up back at
append="hdc=ide-scsi" in lilo.conf and /sbin/modprobe scsi_mod /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi
in /sbin/init.d/boot.local
Is there anything else I am missing? We still get the error 'can't load SCSI device' with cdrecord -scanbus
Make sure your are logged on as root. Goto /etc/rc.config open file. find a line, initrd_modules="" there could be something in there already if there is put a space then enter ide-scsi if there is nothing in there make sure there is no space between hyphenation and ide-scsi. Save file. In konsole or terminal window type SuSEconfig enter when finished type mk_initrd when finished type lilo enter. Now if you get errors it means there are spaces or not in rc.config part, also when doing mk_initrd part it may say something about suse.initrd just ignore this is to do with the backup kernel SuSE sometimes installs. Now you should see the cdr if you do a cdrecord -scanbus, if not there it could be that cdr is not present in fstab the cdr device identification is now known as sr0. So just copy the line from your cd in fstab and replace in relevant places if this is needed to be done after this stage you might have to reboot, but try SuSEconfig to reinitialise machine first.
Any help gratefully recieved. Steve.

The scsi-emulation code is already compiled into the SuSE distro kernel. The only thing you have to do is to have an append "hdc=ide-scsi" in your lilo.conf.
At least that is what works for my HP CD-RW 9100+

Hi everyone.
I am trying to get an ATAPI teac CD writer installed. It is recognised as an ordinary CD rom and I have compiled SCSI support into the kernel.
cdrecord -scanbus
returns No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.
I've spent 2 hours reading the previous mails but to no avail.
Must I still put the append line in lilo conf for example?
Any help gratefully recieved.
Thanks, Steve.
