[SLE] problems with ttyS?

I keep getting the following message while trying to in install a APC ups.
WARNING: /dev/ttyS0 does not appear to be a valid tty.
Both ttyS0 and ttyS1 show up in the boot sequance. I'm i missing something
in this. There is no modem on this machine so that dosn't help
