Hi, Bandwidth ;) My opinion is a bad RTL8139. I used that same card on my system for quite some time, and experienced hard locks. Once I went to 3Com, and better, Linksys, the locks stopped. As for the adsl problem. Do you have the dhcpd patch? Also, netscape 4.73 has problems. I use 4.75 and the netscape locks are gone. One last suggestion. When your isp hoses you up, try #/sbin/init.d dhclient restart #/sbin/init.d nscd restart This may help. Ron --- vhf@skynet.be wrote:
Hi Ron,
The components of my PC are : - MB Asus P3C - PIII 800 Mhz intel - 256 Mb Rimm memory 400 Mhz - 3 SCSI disk 18 GB 10.000 rpm // 2940 U2W card - sound card PCI 128 sb - RLT 8139 Ethernet card - CDROM 40x - CDRW 12/4/32x Thats all.
SuSE 7 standard installation.
So I'm behind a little firewall which is connected to the internet ADSL. Normally I connect with linux but now I connected to internet via windows sygate program just to observ the behavior of my adsl connection. Indeed I suspect my ISP to disconnect me when he has heavy traffic problems ( to larger his bandwide ??? dont know the term in english // french = bande passante)
"""""" This is why I posted a question to the mailing list about ADSL SIGNALIZATION, to observ my ISP""""""
Comming back to the problem, I have the problem of DNS stopping sometimes the whole machine. For example, when my ISP interrupts the ADSL connection now, while surfing , when I'm quick, I can kill the processus according to netscape and I won't have any problems. When I wait for a while, netscape doesn't work any more, closing it doesn't help ctrl+alt+F1 neither. It seems like the searching and resolving of the name in DNS on an inexisting IP ( since the line is off ) makes an indefinite loop, blocking the machine. A hard reboot is requierd. ### Maybe I should wait until internet connection is reestablished#####
I can suspect my ethernet card since the kernel gives the folling message on my xconsole : PCI : increasing latency timer of device 02: 48 to 64
I could suspect my rimm memory because it's quite new on the market.
Voilà thats'all
Thanks again, nice WE.
Filip.

My problem is : I use ADSL. My nameserver = nameserver ISP (DNS)
Sometimes ( 1/10) when my ADSL connection falls out ( and while using Netscape or Kmail ( using DNS) ) my whole machine locksup. ' ctl+alt+F1 etc.; doesn't work anymore. Sometimes I can kill the processus.
This seems very strange to me. How can DNS be so influent ! 10% hard reboot is too much.
Anybody has a suggestion ?
Thanks in advance
Filip.
