Thanks all. It's heartening to see so many suggestions. I'll have to
wait a couple of days before I start working on it, but /home is safely
unmounted just now (I'm running as root - not ideal, I know).

And I got a copy of SuSE 7.0 Pro this morning :-) so life's not all bad.
