Only use the modules you need or will expect to need. You can also
choose to build support into the kernel and chuck the modules
altogether.
It makes a bigger kernel though, but may be more secure.

Where was the original kernel located? Usually it's in /boot.
Put your kernel there. The machine did boot with linux at one time, yes?

Play around with kernels for awhile. Have your boot and rescue floppies
ready to reinstall
your original working kernel, if your new one fails. You can also set
lilo up
to use your original kernel as default, then your experimental as
"linux1".
That way if your experimental boot fails you can always reboot the
original
with a control-alt-delete.
Thats the best way to learn. Compile and test.
