[SLE] DSL modem as a firewall?

Hello Linux folkz,
Friend of mine wanted to hook up his home network on the Internet.
I advised him to use Linux box with two NICs as a firewall and gateway
that I use for my home network. One NIC is connected to DSL modem,
another NIC is connected to internal network hub. But he wants to use
expensive one DSL modem with embedded firewall features connected
directly to his home network hub.
Could somebody tell please what network schema is more preferable in
terms of security and protection?
