"James (Jim) Hatridge"
Hi All,,
I'm trying to get 6.3 running on an old 486/80 system here. I got it loaded no problem.. But when I boot, it hangs at "mounting /dev/pts". Can anyone give me an idea what "/dev/pts" is for? What program it uses etc.
It is for pseudo terminals which xterm/rxvt and other applications use to allow them to pretend to be terminals. (There should be none of these programs running during the boot up, unless you have done something yourself which requires them or uses the directory for other purposes) I would bet, assuming a standard installation, that the directory /dev/pts/ does not exist, or you are trying to mount it twice (this is only a guess) Are you using devfs or hardcoded /dev ? Is this a standard kernel ? There may also be some sort of problem with the autoloading of modules -- the kernel could be waiting for a module it needs to load in order to mount /dev/pts/ and it is not getting loaded (in fact this is more likely than my first guess since I would assume mount would give an error if there was a problem with the directory.) The most likely cause of this would be the inability to locate and execute /sbin/modprobe (AKA /sbin/insmod) or an error in /etc/conf.modules or some sort of a problem in the /lib/modules/"kernel version" directory, either with a module itself or /lib/modules/"kernel version"/modules.dep -> are all your file systems ext2 type fs ? What kind of disks ? Hope this helps.
