I think you are doing Michael a disservice here. I have watched this
thread for some time now.
Your initial posting claimed that the SuSE 6.4 was bad, and that 'almost
nothing worked'.
I have had no problems with the install and running of the system *as
supplied by SuSE*.
Several others have written in to say so as well.
Where I have had problems has been due to outside apps and/or utils I
have attempted to use.
When that occurs, this list has been a pure Godsend.
As SuSE themselves, (and every other distro, too) have said, if you
decide to compile your own kernel, you are on your own. Since my first
intro to SuSE, (6.1) I have not bothered to recompile the kernel. I find
the overheads included in a standard kernel are minimal enough that they
don't worry me, and I am not trying to run anything that is currently
not supported. YMMV.
Overall, I think Michael showed remarkable restraint, given the
(apparent) tone of your earlier postings.
I think this thread is getting a little old now.
