Can a user quit KDE and remain in X?
If you mean logout yes, you could configure it at
Yast--> System Administration
Login Configuration --> [and set this values]
Login GUI -->Graphical
Display Manager --> KDM
Shutdown Behavior of KDM --> root
and then CONTINUE
how can a user start X and go into GNOME instead of KDE?
tartx [window_manager]
in this case [of course you have to had installed GNOME firts]
tartx gnome
