dear all
thanks for answering my ques re recompile kernel.
i've some ref on how to recompile the kernel & change the lilo.conf for back up, just in case there is something wrong with the new kernel & i can't boot.
My question: ============ how do i back up my old kernel & how to access linux using the old kernel if i can't boot from the new one if i'm booting from a BOOT DISK & not lilo??
I'm not sure right now how to even make a boot disk but I've read a little and I think you just copy the kernel image over to the floppy. In order to keep your old kernel available for emergencies you would copy /boot/vmlinuz to /boot/vmlinuz.old or some other name you would like. Then create a entry in /etc/lilo.conf like this below your regular kernel entry. image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/hda6 label = Linux image = /boot/vmlinuz.old root = /dev/hda6 label = Backup The first one would be your new kernel and the second one would be the old one. It will boot the first one by default If you ran into problems with the new one the you can boot the old one by typing "Backup" at the lilo prompt. You can put anything into "label =" that you would like. Then type "lilo" to change the lilo settings.
============ my current situation is this, i'm using suse 6.4, kernel 2.2.14 - it's on my 2nd hard disk, the 1st h.d. is windows. at first i boot my computer from lilo which is on the mbr of my windows hd. subsequently i reinstalled my windows & now i can't access lilo...so, now i'm booting form the boot disk supplied by suse. ================
The instructions above will recreate lilo on the mbr for
you. All you have to do is type "lilo" and it writes it
to the mbr.
Have a great day.
