That stock deal is all well and good - if you have enough money that you can afford to loose. I'd love to buy a bunch of RedHat and be able to afford to loose $4,000 - but I just can't feasibly do that. While it's good to support companies you like (personally I don't have anything against MS), it's hard for the little guy to take such a loss just to avoid better buys like Microsoft. Perhaps after we see some profits and such...
Micro$oft is a pyramid scheme which can continue to prosper only so long as it continues to grow, and it can only continue to grow if it illegally abuses its monopoly power to take over new markets. (Just thought I would warn people who might be tempted by the idea that it is a "good buy" at the moment. I do not know what to think about Linux stocks, but have always suspected that the Linux companies are secretly being propped up by Micro$oft and friends so that their lawyers can point to it as "competition" -- and as soon as they finish bribing their way out of their legal problems they will finish implementing their "Halloween" plans, the destruction of netscape and corruption of www standards being the essential first steps.)
