Has SuSE gone completely mad!
As I understand it, the equivalent of what we now know as SuSE would be the professional version. You know, you need only to buy the distro to have all those programs you like so much.
From what I see out of that announcement, the "Professional" version is
the equivalent to what we now use.
But the professional costs about 70$...
yes, but for first time users.
I use SuSE mainly at home, running an apache web server to test my home-berwed cgi-scripts etc.
As I see it, the professional is little more than a diet version of what we're used to, which is useless.
you're now messing personal with professional, IMHO. I wonder wether you can upgrade from "personal" to "professional" in future, without the extra cost. From what I read, we ("old" and registrated customers) will get the update to "professional". Difference will be the book, "update" instead of "install" handbook. Subscription will be the same. (All this from the german announcement). I'd be realy annoyed if it turns out different. Just the starters pack (professional) is more expensive and prices have been constant since I bought my first in 1994/5, I guess the work into it has become more. Then it was 3 CD's: install, source and live file system. This has become more...
I'm afraid SuSE is going much the same way as redhat, which was why I initially switched from RH to SuSE.
I remember discussions about having the update version without the book and make it cheaper. I'd make that above decision after having seen the update. I consider splitting the book into install/update, configuration and programs makes sense, I'll judge this as soon as I see it.
Does anyone else feel that way too?
well, frankly no. Juergen
