Hi All & Derek, who wrote: <snip>
I see Netscape 6 preview 2 is out and they've adopted one of these stupid "install from the web" things. It's a total pain. I want to download the files onto my laptop or LS120 drive at work, take them home and install them on my box there. Without a straightforward tarball or RPM I can't do it. The Helix GNOME installer is another case in point, but at least they make RPMs available.
On a more SuSE related note, I see the NS6PR2 installer doesn't work on SuSE. My 6.2 box SEGVd when I ran it, while my 6.4 box spat out a load of "Bad file descriptor" errors. Could be my firewall, or one of a host of different things. I've written a note to Netscape asking for a standard tarball. I would encourage anyone else who gets bitten by this (on Netscape or GNOME or anything else) to write to the software producer and ask for a less fancy and more reliable download and install mechanism.
(Thwarted by Netscape, I got the Mozilla build instead. That failed to get out past our firewall. Odd because I've never had a problem with the previous builds. Ah well...)
<snip> Yup me too. Try this however.... ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6_PR2/unix/linux22/sea/ netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-sea.tar.gz Now just do the usual download/untaring thingy & you will be up & surfing, before you can say "Borg!"
